Etching in brass tube?

   I picked up a 1979 880 and I've been trying to clean the brass tube.

The buffer it had was completely "melted" and turned into gooey chunks.

It left a residue inside the tube that I've been using a brass brush to remove but I can't seem to make any head way past a certain point.

Is it possible there's etching in the brass from it?
