There is a 1938B Red Ryder listed on e-bay. The traditional sundial and compass are on the stock. The seller states it is a "Christmas Morning" model. No paper work and no other info appearing on stock or forearm.
Does just the sundial and compass make it an authentic Christmas gun??

Sundial/compass is the Christmas Dream gun.

I can't find the listing.  However the short answer is no. The 1983 original has been a subject of some counterfeits. Got to be careful. The first step is to check the Lot #. It has to be late '83 or early '84. The one that I had was dated Nov. of '83.
All I'm for is the liberty of the individual.

Later models should be serialized IIRC. The first one guess you need to decipher the Lot No.

ETA- IIRC the Lot No. for the first version should start with a 3 for '83 or a 4 for '84. Then a letter for the month, then the 5 digit sequential production number. A made up example of what a Lot No. from August, 1983 would look like is: 3H22443.
