I am a new fan of Daisy. So please forgive me.
Is 881 or 880 stamped on the barrel shroud of the 881? I just bought an 881. The barrel shroud says 880. Also I can’t tell if the receiver is actually an 881 or if someone scrubbed the black off of it to make it look like an 881. Will the lot number tell me if it is an 880 or 881? |

As far as i know, they are stamped "881". The lot number won't tell you whether or not it's an 881, but it will tell you the month and year it was stamped.
In the photo, the top gun is a 1981 w/spot welded rear sight and plastic elevator, the bottom is a 1975 w/screwed on sight and steel elevator: FWIW, when you see an 880 with a screwed on rear sight, you can bet it came from the factory with a smoothbore barrel. Spot welded sight = rifled barrel. |

The reason the date could matter is the 881 was ended after 1986. So if the date of the gun in question is newer, that would tell you it's not an 881. I'd look carefully at the bore to see if it is rifled. If it is, it will at least function the same as an 881. But even if it is an 881, it would appear the shroud has been changed.

Thank you for your help.
I’m sure you already figured out why I thought too much into this but I will explain myself just in case. Since these are all versions of the 880 it would make sense that they all used the 880 shroud. The 880 being smooth bore and the 881 being rifled. The lot number is E905823. I think that makes it May 1979. Do any of these numbers tell if it’s an 881 or 880? I’m thinking this is an 880 with the receiver scrubbed to look like an 881. |

No, the numbers don't tell you what the model is. They tell the month and year and the production sequence of the gun.
The 880 was a smoothbore until Dec. 1978, but after that it got a rifled barrel. The 881 was made until '86, the only difference between it and a rifled 880 was the color of the finish on the receiver. It could be a scrubbed 880, and it could also be an 881 with the shroud swapped for one from an 880. I'd look closely to see if the wear on the shroud matched the rest of the gun. Also, the silvery receiver of the 881 had a sort of clearcoat finish on it. If your gun has a bare metal receiver, well... |

I have had 2 881’s and the differences I found between them and the 880 are:
The top of the dove tail has a milled recess vs the rough casting mark on the 880. I wish all my 880’s were like this as the final product just seems more put together. The inside of the barrel shroud is seriously reinforced. I found this out when I went to put in the 901 center support. The receiver as a brown paint on the top and bottom that makes the fun seem “weathered”. |

Thank you. Did all 881’s have the silver receiver? I just bought an older 881 and it has the same blue finish as the barrel shroud?
