Steve, is the spring copper washed? If you can measure the wire diameter in thousandths of an inch, as well as count how many coils the spring has, I can tell you if there's a modern spring that will work as a replacement.

Steve, it's probably the same spring they used in the early No. 111 Model 40 guns. I am basing this on your coil count and the length. Your spring does measure somewhat less than a good 111-40 spring, but I believe the spring has sacked over time and lost some of the overall length it would have had when new. Sometimes you can tell if the spring has sacked by the coil spacing being uneven. Uneven coils are usually seen more on the coils towards each end than in the the middle.

Iceman, since I like springs I may as well throw in my two pennies. If you are trying to restore as original the gun, then all dimensions are important. If simple function is the goal then a spring of approximate size is adequate. If high performance is the aim then tension along with size, matter. In any case, avoiding excess friction by using a straight spring vs a distorted one should be of primary concern. I suppose what I'm trying to say is, weigh the options and get that old sweetheart spitting BBs once again!   Good luck.   Russ
