Hello!
I recently bought a Red Ryder, and I want to keep proper care of it. Thing is, I don't have any "20" weight motor oil avaliable. I have one that is rated 10W-40, and another that is not rated as any viscosity, it is a bottle of chainsaw two-stroke oil. Furthermore, I have two bottles of Beretta gun oil, both in drops and spray. Will any of these options do the trick? When, and how should I apply the oil? ![]() |

The 10w40 is probably the best option from what you mentioned. Not knowing what’s in the 2-stroke oil or the gun oil makes it questionable.
I usually use air tool oil (for nail guns, impact wrenches, etc.) It’s formulated for rubber-sealed tools with moving parts under pressure. Best not to over-oil, 2-3 drops about every 1,000 rounds seems to work ok, too much and it will leak down, make everything messy, and get onto the stock wood. It can also migrate into the bore (which kills accuracy. |

Forgot to mention, a small bottle with an eyedropper is ideal (if you can find one). Another decent option, if you know anyone that vapes, is one of those filler bottles, they have a long narrow filler tube that works pretty well (just clean it out really good first !)

Many thanks for your speedy help. I have found the manual and specifications of the two-stroke oil bottle, the link is right here:
https://www-static-nw.husqvarna.com/hbd/tdrdownload/v2/pub000091691/doc000218496/SDS/DTiqZWkxcIdnfSHKbbF_0z32LOw?httproute=True I know looking at the ingredients and stuff can be cumbersome, so feel free to disregard. You have helped me a lot.

Will an empty syringe work? Drop the desired amount in a glass to be safe, pick it up with a plastic syringe, and put it in the oil hole. I think it can be a good measure.
Also, I have read that transmission fluid is a good alternative. Is that true?

A syringe sounds like a great idea, but anything that will get the oil onto rather than around that little hole will work.
After oiling, I store mine muzzle-down until the next time I shoot so the oil runs down into the wiper rather than back into the action. Cobalt327, the o.p. of this thread listed the three best choices (but I don’t remember where); multi-vis motor oil, 3-in-one electric motor oil (NOT the household stuff !), and Pellgun oil. I’m a little leary of a.t.f. Mine run fine on what I use, but I would not be afraid to use hydraulic jack oil, or loader/backhoe hydraulic oil (again, rubber seals/moving parts under pressure). |

Oops !!!
I was thinking about something else, mis-spoke about Cobalt327 (that was another forum, senior moment I guess !) But info is still the same. |

I believe thinner is better than thicker. And I agree with Rex regarding the 10w-40 being the better option of the oils mentioned.
This is the short list Rex mentioned: 1. 3-In-One Electric Motor Oil (not the same
as “regular” 3-In-One, see photo). Found at Ace, H. Depot, etc. 2. Motor oil. Daisy recommends straight 20w
or 30w. Personally I use 5w-20 Mobil 1 because that's what I use in my car. Thinner oil preferred over thicker. 3. Crosman Pellgunoil. It would not be my first choice because $4 for a 1/4 oz tube is expensive. Walmart has it in the sporting goods area. There's no need to flood it, maybe 4 drops through the “OIL HERE” hole is plenty to begin with in a new gun. |

Many thanks to the both of you, your help has been a godsend.
I think I will use the 10 weight motor oil I have, after I look around the garage once more. I have read somewhere that you should use "non detergent oil", and that stuff is used in air compressors, like teerex said. We have an air compressor at home, so I would be surprised if there is no oil left. If so, I will use the motor oil. Many thanks for your help. ![]() |

For the record, the MSDS for Pellgunoil says it is Monolec® GFS single grade 30w Engine Oil 8430. This oil is recommended for diesel engines.
In the MSDS, twice it's described as having
"detergency". IMHO cautions against using detergent motor oil came
from a time when oil formulation contents were basically unknown, and they
varied wildly between companies. Now, I wouldn't recommend using any of the so-called 'high mileage' oils designed to soften valve stem seals and swell gaskets. |
