I have an old Daisy 140 Defender that I have restored but the Plunger will not engage with the Shear when I attempt to cock the gun. All the parts are present and I detect no serious wear or broken-off areas.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions to get this fine old Daisy shooting again. Thanks

Hey Mark... Is the sear spring installed correctly?  Only thing I can think of if you say all the parts look good.

I have it installed so that when it pushes against the safety bolt it forces the shear up to the top of the trigger. Does that sound right?

Its been too long since I had and worked on the 140 so I can not recollect the exact configuration.  HOPE SOMEONE ELSE CAN COMMENT, BUT I DO REMEMBER I HAD A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH THE SEAR AND SPRING.  Sorry I can not help anymore.  Lets hope someone who has the 140 can comment.

The Shear Spring will go in the shear two ways, one way with the short end angled up and the other with it angled down (this is the back end of the shear that goes up against the safety bolt). The angled down position seems the right way to me because it provides pressure to push up on the shear. No matter which direction I position the shear spring, the plunger fails to catch on the shear.

There is a small metal indention in the Trigger that appears to be there to pull down on the front end of the shear (that is sandwiched inside the trigger) so I think the front end of the shear fits under this so when the trigger is pulled it pulls down on the shear to release the plunger.

I don't know if I'm making an assembly error or something else is going on?

Just to close out this post, I solved the problem by gently bending in the trigger with small pliers that applied pressure which prevented the sear from slipping down. This solved the problem and now the gun cocks and shoots as it should.
