Jean Shepherd (who was the author & narrator of  Ralphie’s A Christmas Story) once wrote a piece about his personal BB gun, in which he took a shot at the full, overhead Indiana moon and then--being a very young boy--he was terribly afraid that he would cause it to ‘pop’ and fall from the sky.

He totally forgot that episode, but years later, ‘scotch in hand’, he was watching a televised view of a lunar lander claw scratching at the moon’s surface. He said, “it all came rushing back to me, and I broke out in a cold sweat, imaging the announcer exclaiming that “they have found a tiny glint of metal here in the lunar soil--why, it seems to be the size of a BB”.

Point is, to escape earth’s orbit, his BB gun would have to shoot a BB velocity of Mach 33 (thanks, Google) and I’m not sure how that translates to fps…but then, the springs were stronger back in the day.

Just one question. Why does Daisy say it has an fps of 350, when it can hardly make 250 fps?

Many airguns out today are much closer to their rated velocity.

Being 100 fps lower than a rating of 350 is a major variance.

Its a little known fact that a BB will travel 100 FPS faster at the exact elevation of 1368 feet which happens to be the elevation of Rogers, Arkansas.Smile

I that really true? Seems a bit hard to believe. Esp. considering the video was done in Texas.

Would that mean that the same BB gun would shoot at over 500 fps in Denver Co.(5,280 ft.)? And over 600 fps in Mexico City (7,400 ft.)

Sounds crazy.

I have a camo model 1999 myself. Bought it from Daisy when they were on sale for $30.00 delivered. Walmart had blue ones for real cheap IIRC. Right now they're $28.25. Add a bottle of BBs to the 1999 and get free shipping on the order. But no Bulls Eyes there...
