Thanks for the detailed breakdown (if it does muddy the water a bit) to show not everything we thought we knew is cut and dried. Maybe some day there will be an Encyclopedia of Daisy dates. I just hope it will include Western Auto, Sears, Montgomery Ward........

Some time ago I asked Joe Murfin when a Model 1000 with REG. NO. L213006 had been made. I received an interesting reply that I will present here.
The special circumstances for the Model 1000 wide frame lever action BB gun are as follows: [Begin quote] "Mark: Daisy made the 1000 exclusively for Western Auto Stores from 1965 until the late 1980s. It is a lever action, 700-shot BB repeater that is very similar to the Daisy Model 95. Register No.s were first stamped on Daisy guns in 1952. "Registers numbers for the 1000 all began with A, B, C, or D, and the last Register number stamped on a Model 1000 was a D-prefix number stamped on April 14, 1972. There were no further Model 1000 frames stamped after that date and before the last Register Number stamping was recorded on 10/31/1972 (italics mine, see text & photo following quote). As you know, in November, 1972, the company transitioned from Register Numbers to Lot Numbers in which the initial letter represented the month (D = April) and 2 = 1972. "We have seen numbers that were stamped as Register Numbers which were not in our database and, based on the date of manufacturer, were actually coded like Lot Numbers (italics mine, see note below photo). I checked with a long-time Daisy employee who told me that the process of stamping the frame and all of the information was one step, then adding the actual Register or Lot Number was a second step. This make sense in that the company might stamp several thousands of frames at a time, but only number those for which they had demand from a retailer that month. "I believe your gun's frame had already been stamped with all required markings and the words Register Number then, in November of 1972, after they converted to Lot Numbers, it was pulled and stamped with a number which was, essentially, a November, 1972 number." [End quote] In yet another example of why dating the Daisy BB gun is not cut and dried, I was going through my photos and came across a Model 1000 that doesn't follow the rules above. It has a REG. NO. beginning with "L" (see photo). The prefixes were supposed to only be A through D. Also, the records indicate that the last Model 1000 REG. NO. was Oct. 31, 1972 (formatted "K2xxxxx") but the gun below shows it was stamped Nov. 1972 (formatted "L213006"): NOTE- The No. 1938 Red Ryder Carbine is another example of a gun stamped with a Reg. No. that the date can be read the same as a Lot No.

Steve, it should shoot uber hard- harder than the current model 25 shoots. If you're talking about an aluminum drink can, it should go through several cans in a row. Adding oil to rejuvenate the seals can be done with the gun assembled but it's easier if it's taken apart. That said, if you want to you can try

Good to go. Another old Daisy back in service. It even shoots pretty good, so I think the seals are ok. Oiled them up so hoping it will build even better power. At about 10 yards it won't reliably penetrate a pop can, but it did manage to punch through a couple of times.

Thanks gents! I have a new shot tube on-order from Daisy for it. I don't *think* it's a single shot? I guess I'll find out when the shot tube gets here. By the manual, it looks like the tube is unscrewed from the barrel and then there is a tab I slide forward to expose the fill port. The manual says it's a 50 shot tube, if I remember correctly.

Steve, I wish I had a nickle for each Daisy I found with a missing shot tube. There were a few comments on here a while back on that subject, and the frustration it causes. Some of us have "Frankensteined" those guns by screwing in model 25 shot tubes. The length may not be exactly the same but it might get the gun back in shooting condition.
I have a couple extra tubes on hand for just such an occasion. Daisy still sells them. Less than $15 each as I recall. Is your 99 a single shot or some other variation? |

It likely is a letter L, that would follow the REG. NO. pattern of one letter followed by six numbers. There's a chance it was made Nov. 1976 but w/o the lever being there to give a clue I just cannot be sure. There's a good chance your gun was made before it was possible for anyone knowing how, to read the date from the stamping. To be sure you will need to send a form in to the Daisy Museum, there's a link at the end of the first paragraph of post #1.
Good luck.

Very informative thread. I just got a Mod 99 today, for free. In pretty decent condition, too, except the shot tube is missing and it has a broken lever. Just got a lever ordered off of Ebay and I ordered a new shot tube from Daisy. I think everything else is good, but I am new to these older Daisy's. If anyone can tell me the approximate manufacture date for this 99, I'd appreciate it. I'm just curious. Wood stock with a missing medallion, and wood forend, along with a factory sling. It is: Reg# 607075 It *might* be L607075. I can't tell if the "L" is just a small scratch that looks like an L or not. Thanks!
