Here's some information on when various changes were made to the Daisy Model 880 airgun. It's useful for dating an 880 when the LOT or REG. No. isn't available, like from photos. It's not complete- and given the amount of changes there were through the years, it may never be 100% complete. I will be adding to it as I find new info. I'm cutting/pasting from a word doc I created to document my findings which mangles the formatting when posting to the forum but until I find a better way, it'll have to do.

880 SPECIFIC REGISTER & LOT NUMBER INFO

The earliest 880s (all made during 1972) have Register Numbers (REG. NO.) that cannot be read for the date.
  • The first 880s had a Register Number beginning with the letter A. Many of these guns were Sears/Ted Williams model 799-190720.  The last Register No. recorded in the Daisy database without being a date-coded number was B069947 stamped on 10-6-72.
  • This means 880s having a Reg. No. with A or B followed by "0" were made in 1972.
ADDITIONAL INFO FOR DETERMINING THE DATE A DAISY WAS MADE: Register/Lot Number Formatting.

INTERNAL DIFFERENCES/DATES
Info on internal differences and changes made to the 880 has been a bit hard to come by. I actually omitted the internal info for that reason- the sample population is so scant that there's several years between the differences, which makes the info a lot less useful. Hopefully I will get enough info to fill in the gaps enough to make it worthwhile.
PISTONS
  • 1982 May LOT NO. E217995 has flat top, as-cast piston, brass tube
  • 1991 Dec. LOT NO. 1M15732 has machined aluminum flat top piston, very nice looking part
  • 1995-’96 flat top
  • 1998 Nov. (plastic receiver) LOT NO 1198 13850 has machined flat top piston
  • 2004 has a flat top piston
  • 2013 S/N 162013732814U Chinese production is as-cast w/notch

COMPRESSION TUBES

  • The early compression tubes were steel or brass, possibly both were used simultaneously
  • In late 1990, compression tubes changed from brass to aluminum·
  • It seems that guns that originally came with plastic pump levers use aluminum pump tubes and the late style chamber seal

  • Early aluminum tube guns used the new style intake valve assembly with the screwed in exhaust valve

Good stuff man. Thank you. Really glad to see renewed interest in the 880. I've had all the bb/pellet pumpers from 1960's on. The 880 is my favorite for looks, feel, trigger pull, accuracy, pump ease, repairablity, and etc.
All I'm for is the liberty of the individual.

WOW!!! So much data is mind-boggleing. Cobalt, I wish I had your organizational skills.

BTW. The 880 is my favorite pumper. Really enjoy using the ones I have. I've been tempted to get a few more!

A question from a new enthusiast...
Are Reg No.s visible on the earliest 880s from 1972?
Where is the the Reg or Lot number on the rifle?

The numbers are stamped into the barrel 'shroud', I'll attach a photo showing where to look.

The earliest 880s did not have numbers that could be read for the date.

The first 880s had a Register Number beginning with the letter A.  The last Register No. recorded in the Daisy database without being a date-coded number was B069947 stamped on 10/6/72. So, this means that 880s having a Reg. No. starting with A or B followed by 0 were made in 1972.

Reg. No.s were used well into 1975. Sept. is the earliest month of 1975 I have seen with a Lot No.

Hope that helps a little.
